A fabulous fortune in diamonds has vanished. And now, aboard the luxury liner Kilmorden Castle, mysterious strangers pillage her cabin and try to strangle her. When she discovers that "Kilmorden Castle" is actually the name of a passenger ship headed for South Africa, she boards it immediately, and embarks on an adventure that involves stolen diamonds, a criminal mastermind known only as the Colonel, a rebellion in South Africa, and a mysterious handsome man named Harry who may be the man in the brown suit. Anne picks up a note dropped by the doctor who pronounced the man dead which reads “17.1 22 Kilmorden Castle”. The man is identified as LB Carton and in his pocket was a viewing document for The Mill House, owned by Sir Eustace Peddler MD. On a piece of paper, also smelling of mothballs, it says "17.1 22 Kilmorden Castle".
